Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic progressive (of longer duration and continually getting worse) disease with no specific pattern that causes hardening of areas in the brain and spinal cord. It interferes with the brain's ability to send message to muscle and organs via the nervous system.

With Multiple Sclerosis the myelin sheaths are stripped off of the nerve fibers they insulate and protect. The protection of a myelin sheath ensures the rapid transmission of nerve impulse from the brain to interpret sensations and respond. Multiple Sclerosis causes this demyelination where bundles of nerve fibers lose their myelin protection. When the myelin is not there, messages are not transmitted effectively and therefore movement is slowed and/or coordination and sensation are altered.

Home Medical Equipment for Multiple Sclerosis Patients

As with many other progressive diseases, Multiple Sclerosis creates the need for an endless array of equipment. Mobility needs for persons with multiple sclerosis range from scooters to power wheelchairs. Persons with Multiple Sclerosis may also require daily living aids, bathing and toileting aids, ambulation products, hospital beds, and environmental control units.
